Interesting development with Tsinghua (owners of Spreadtrum) taking a 3% stake in IMG. This feels like a defensive move, similar to the Apple and Intel strategic investments of yesteryear. In his final few months at the helm, SHY concluded two big deals important for re-establishing growth at PowerVR: one with Mediatek and the other with Spreadtrum, hence the relevance of this small investment.
Tsinghua and the importance of China as a future semiconductor powerhouse received special attention from SHY in the interims slide presentation.
I'm guessing the sight of Heath & Co scuttling across to Cupertino within 2 weeks of SHY's resignation , in order to try and sell off IMG didn't fill Tsinghua with confidence, so a statement of intent was perhaps required.
